When Is a Tooth ExtractionNecessary?
While we take a conservative approach that seeks to protect your natural teeth whenever possible, there are certain times when saving a tooth might not be possible.
We will only ever extract a tooth after all other methods have been tried. If we do recommend an extraction, rest assured that we provide gentle extractions to alleviate discomfort or infection. You can be confident knowing that we will keep you comfortable during the procedure by offering sedation options.
There are several reasons that may make the extraction of teeth necessary. Here are the most common:
- Breakage
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Infection
- Malformed teeth
- Severe decay
- Severe gum disease
- To prepare for a prosthetic like a denture
- To prepare for orthodontic treatment
What Does The Tooth ExtractionProcess Involve?
We will thoroughly assess your oral health so that we are sure an extraction is the most appropriate solution for you before we begin. You will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area, and we’ll make sure that you don’t feel anything.
Then, your dentist will use specialised instruments to remove the tooth. If required, we can place sutures to accelerate the healing process at the site. We will provide you with aftercare advice to ensure that you have a quick recovery.
Aftercare Instructions
As you may experience some discomfort, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever or apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek. We also recommend that in the first 24 hours after your procedure, you
- Avoid consuming alcohol and using tobacco
- Eat only soft foods
- Refrain from sucking through a straw or spitting
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Chew on the opposite side of your mouth
After a day has passed, you can resume eating any foods you wish provided doing so is comfortable for you. Though you can brush and floss as usual, be careful around the extraction site. You also can rinse with warm salt water two to three times a day to further clean the area.
